Why I Hunt & You Should Too

My reasons for hunting are truly endless. But, I wanted to share the biggest reasons why I hunt and think you should, too!

Family Tradition

I started hunting at just 4 years old with my father and brother. My father was raised hunting and he raised my brother and I the same way. Not only is it his favorite way to spend time with his kids, but it’s our favorite way to spend time with our dad! To say that hunting has been just a part of my lifestyle is an understatement. My first hunting experience started with a snowshoe hare and continued through almost every big game animal in Alaska, including my Kodiak Brown Bear.

At the age of ten, my father actually shot the first mountain goat on Kodiak with my grandfather’s Remington .243. My brother and I also shot our first mountain goats at 10 years old with the same Remington .243. Clearly, hunting is a strong passion of ours, but it’s also a tradition. There’s nothing quite like quality time in the great outdoors, interacting with God’s country.

High Quality Meat

Speaking of practical, you can always count on hunting trips to fill the freezer with organic meat. There is no better way to get your hands on the best quality meat around, and without paying $12/pound at the grocery store! Honestly, I haven’t needed to buy beef (or seafood) at the grocery store for over a year. Fresh game is not only most cost effective, but it noticeably tastes better. Plus, you always know where your food comes from! Hunting is certainly a great way to save money on groceries and enjoy the tastiest, freshest meat possible.

God’s Country (It’s in the Bible!)

“And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.” Genesis 1:28

“Now then, please take your gear, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and hunt game for me.” Genesis 27:3

In my opinion, it’s pretty simple: Hunting is part of God’s Word and His plan. Also, hunting in the great outdoors means spending time in God’s beautiful country.

Make a Living

My parents started the lodge when I was just 1 year old, so I have spent the majority of my life involved in the family business. Hunting and fishing has literally been my livelihood, just like many other hunters and fisherman in the world. Without being raised at the lodge and in the great outdoors, I wouldn’t have the knowledge or expertise to write this or the opportunity to inspire others.

Hunting has also provided me the opportunity to film my outdoor experiences and share them on my YouTube show, “Krimson Trail”! I’m lucky enough to work and play at the same time and I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Invaluable Experience & Education

Due to my frequent hunting experiences, I have not only made endless great memories but learned invaluable lessons about the outdoors and survival.

Living in Alaska, it is essential to know and use survival skills. Sometimes, knowing how to make a fire or find shelter can save your life. Being in the outdoors while hunting gives you a much better understanding of the outdoors. It equips you with the necessary knowledge and experiences to survive in an emergency situation.

I’m very thankful that my father taught me about hunting and fishing, but more importantly how to stay safe in the unpredictable wilderness. It’s empowering to know that when faced with a life or death situation, I have the skill set to get home safely.

Sharing Our Passion with Others

Hundreds of hunters visit us each year and it is so rewarding to see how smitten they are with their experiences on Kodiak. There’s nothing better than witnessing excitement and joy they experience while traveling to the “Last Frontier.” These hunting and fishing experiences shape their lives, just as they shape mine. Without the blessing of our lodge, I would have never had the opportunity to meet all of these great outdoorsman.

I feel very thankful to live on such a beautiful, game abundant island. I can always count on hunting to make the best of memories, learn new lessons about the outdoors, earn fresh, delicious meat, and enjoy time with family. Given my love for hunting, I want you to experience everything hunting has to offer, while enjoying the beauty of the outdoors, too!
